The York to Harrogate rail line has resumed operations after a thorough safety inspection of the Knaresborough Viaduct, which had previously caused a wall to collapse into the river Nidd. This incident led to significant disruptions for train passengers, with all lines between York and Harrogate blocked on Sunday evening while engineers from Network Rail assessed the situation. The focus was on determining if the viaduct's pillars were at risk.
Network Rail provided an update, stating that all lines between York and Harrogate have now reopened. However, they also warned that trains in this region may continue to experience cancellations or delays of up to 30 minutes. The disruption is expected to persist until the end of the day.
Earlier, Northern Rail had announced that services between York and Harrogate were disrupted in both directions due to urgent repairs. Network Rail engineers were expected to be on-site, and travelers were advised to check for updates. The advice from National Rail can be found on their website (https://www.nationalrail.co.uk/service-disruptions/knaresborough-20260208/).
Interestingly, the disruption did not affect the Leeds to York route via Micklefield in either direction. Passengers traveling on this route can do so without any additional costs. Moreover, ticket restrictions have been lifted during this period of disruption to accommodate travelers.
