Inspiring Youngsters: York Boxers Return to School
Two professional boxers, Leo Atang and Brad Casey, recently returned to their former high school, Archbishop Holgate's, to inspire young pupils. The duo, accompanied by their trainer, Ash Martin, shared their journeys and experiences, offering valuable insights into balancing education and sports.
Atang, a York-based heavyweight, emphasized the importance of pursuing dreams. He shared his own aspirations to become a professional boxer, highlighting the dedication required to achieve such goals. Despite his recent success in Ghana, where he extended his undefeated record to 3-0, Atang remains grounded, encouraging students to follow their passions.
Casey, a cruiserweight with an unbeaten record, also attended Millthorpe School in York. He discussed the significance of qualifications, recounting his journey from a building site to becoming a skilled tradesman. Casey's story serves as a testament to the value of education and hard work.
Martin, the pair's trainer and a former student at Archbishop Holgate's, expressed his enthusiasm for the event. He believes that boxing not only teaches discipline but also empowers quiet individuals to find their voice. Martin's message is clear: sports can open doors to new opportunities and should be accessible to all.
The boxers' visit was a part of a larger initiative to inspire and educate young people. It took place ahead of their upcoming bouts at the Utilita Arena in Newcastle, where they will be featured on the undercard of the highly anticipated Bakhram Murtazaliev vs. Josh Kelly match.
George Middleton, assistant headteacher at the school, praised the assembly as an excellent opportunity for students to learn from the boxers' experiences. He emphasized the importance of celebrating local success stories, hoping that Atang's potential rise to become the next heavyweight champion will inspire and pride the entire community.
