A chapter of British political history has closed: Sir Patrick Duffy, former Labour MP and defence minister, has passed away at the remarkable age of 105. Imagine the stories he could tell! Duffy's life was truly extraordinary. Knighted by Queen Elizabeth II and receiving a papal knighthood from Pope John Paul II, he experienced honours from both secular and religious spheres. His political journey began in 1950, but his first successful election to Parliament came in 1963 after winning the Colne Valley by-election. He then represented Sheffield Attercliffe from 1970 until his retirement in 1992, giving him decades of experience in the House of Commons. During James Callaghan's Labour government in the late 1970s, he served as parliamentary under secretary for the Royal Navy, a role that undoubtedly drew upon his wartime experiences and passion for defence.
But here's where it gets controversial... Meagher revealed that Duffy "took a lot of flak" for being the only MP to publicly criticize Margaret Thatcher in 1981 regarding the death of Republican hunger striker Bobby Sands. This was a bold move, going against the political tide. And this is the part most people miss: despite this initial clash, Thatcher and Duffy later developed a cordial relationship, even sharing tea, particularly during his time as president of the NATO Assembly in the 1980s.
