YouTube Shorts: 21% of AI-Generated Videos Are 'Slop'
As AI video creation tools like OpenAI's Sora and Google's Veo become more accessible, a report by Kapwing reveals a growing issue on YouTube: AI-generated 'slop'. The company's research found that 21% of the 500 YouTube Shorts videos they analyzed were AI-made, with 33% of those being 'brainrot' content, which is nonsensical and low-quality, potentially harming viewers' mental health.
The study also identified top trending channels in specific countries, with South Korea leading in slop consumption. Channels like Three Minutes Wisdom, featuring cute pets defeating wild animals, have amassed billions of views. Pakistan and the US follow, with Spanish-language channel Cuentos Facientes topping the US charts. However, the channel is currently offline.
This trend isn't limited to YouTube. As of May 2025, over 50% of online articles are AI-generated. Meanwhile, US employees have received AI-made work content, known as 'workslop', impacting sectors like IT and consulting.
Some platforms, like TikTok, have introduced features to help users identify AI-generated content. Despite these efforts, the rise of AI slop raises concerns about the quality and authenticity of online content, prompting discussions on the future of content creation and consumption.
